How to Make Healthy Oatmeal Cookies

Healthy Oatmeal Cookies are really simple to make. So, one of the secrets to baking these healthy low-calorie snacks is to use old-fashioned rolled oats. They are readily available in every grocery store.

Another secret tip is to use half the amount of butter with applesauce. Applesauce will still keep them soft and moist but you’ll be reducing the amount of fat, isn’t it great?

Most of us wish to reduce sugar intake in our daily routine so to sweeten these healthy oatmeal cookies I decided to use honey instead of sugar and they did the trick. Honey and oatmeal turned out to be a lovely combination.

I added ½ tsp of cinnamon to give it some extra flavor. If you don’t like it, you can skip it. I didn’t have chocolate chips or any sort of nuts in my pantry but you can add them to make your healthy oatmeal cookies fully loaded and extra flavorsome.

I used whole wheat flour. You can always switch to oat flour, almond flour if you are looking for gluten-free options.

Unsalted butter to give your healthy oatmeal cookies a buttery flavor and ensure that they stay moist.

Other ingredients that are required are; baking powder, salt, and vanilla extract, and egg

Now that you’ve all the ingredients, in a bowl mix whole wheat flour, old-fashioned oats, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Mix it well and keep aside.

Take another bowl with a mixer and beat the applesauce, butter, honey, vanilla, and egg.

Now slowly add in the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients and mix it. Add chocolate chips and nuts if you want. Using a scoop, drop the mixture 2-inch apart on a baking sheet. Press each cookie down with a fork and put it in a preheated oven at 175 C. Bake for around 10 minutes, or until golden brown. Don’t worry if they are soft at this point. Take them out of the oven until they cool down and start to harden. You can keep them stored in the fridge in an air-tight jar for about 1-2 days or you can freeze the dough and just make them warm whenever.

This recipe yields 24 cookies.

Oatmeal Cookies Recipe Modifications

These healthy oatmeal cookies can be adapted according to your likings. Here are some modifications that you can make to enrich them with more flavor.

  • You can add raisins, walnuts, chocolate chips, or even make a healthy oatmeal banana cookie edition if you like. The options are limitless.
  • Butter is very important to keep the healthy oatmeal cookies texture so don’t swap the butter for applesauce completely.
  • If you are looking for a gluten-free option, I would suggest oat flour, almond flour, or gluten-free flour.

Can Healthy Oatmeal Cookies be Stored?

Absolutely!

You can store the baked cookies in an air-tight jar in the refrigeration for 1-2 days. However, I would suggest you make the cookie dough in advance and freeze it.

Just take out the cookie dough, scoop out the cookies, bake them and enjoy them warm.
