What is the truth about refined sugar?

This main ingredient in baked products, “sugar,” is linked to different health conditions, such as diabetes and heart diseases. Sugar is present in many foods making it very hard to avoid. Hence, it is abundant in fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and dairy products. The common example of refined sugar is table sugar and high fructose corn syrup or HFCS. However, this healthy brownie recipe used coconut sugar as an alternative to refined sugar. What is the difference?

Table Sugar vs. Coconut Sugar

The usual white sugar inside our kitchen comes from sugar cane that is processed to extract the sugary juice. Afterward, sugar juice is filtered and turned into sugar crystals. On the other hand, coconut sugar is from the coconut palm tree, which has a lower glycemic index than table sugar. It means it has lower rates of becoming glucose that might affect the rise of blood sugar level.

Surprisingly, coconut sugar does contain more nutrients than regular sugar, known as to only supply “empty calories.” the most notable nutrients that one can get out of coconut sugar are zinc, iron, potassium, and calcium. Also, it has antioxidants and fatty acids that our body needs.

After knowing all of these beneficial effects, I am sure that you are already excited to find out how to make your own “Refined Sugar-free Dessert Fudgy Brownie.”
