Spinach Recipe | Popeye’s Secret Ingredient

Spinach Recipe – Food that is always shunned upon, together with broccoli. Hopefully, not in this case. Extra healthy and extra quick to make.

Spinach Recipe:

When someone would unenthusiastically proclaim that greens are healthy, we immediately assume that they are talking about broccoli. There is nothing wrong with broccoli, however, and other greens too for that matter. What we can blame for the boring aspect of every meal is usually the lack of ingredients or the method of preparation that is responsible for the bad rep. Other than that, your parents were right about the greens. They are really healthy and should be added to every balanced nutrition plan, or even into a normal, everyday diet. Let’s see why!

Green health:

Since a lot of greens are bursting with good vitamins, proteins and minerals, but are low in calories and easy to digest; no wonder they are considered healthy. Coming straight from the field with no additional ‘’sweeteners’’, they are the safest choice for soups and salads as far as health is concerned. Only visible problem here is that they are sometimes too bland to eat, even if you are not that much of a picky eater. Much of the greens like kale, cabbage or lettuce can be incorporated into breakfast meals. Trick here is to prepare it right, as we will show you.

Why greens?

Greens are quite bitter on their own, and it really takes someone that doesn’t complain much for them to be eaten alone or with zero to none ingredients. They are the perfect choice for diet, since they have close to none calories, and you can pretty much eat all you want.  Being low in fat, and good for the immune system, they will help you in almost every health scenario.

There are plenty of greens out there, so even if you don’t like a certain type of them, you can always change. If you don’t like the solid version of them, you can always blend them and have a smoothie on the go. They also help with brain function and optimize gut health.

Spinach:

Superfood we will be dealing with today is spinach. Spinach is a really nutritious vegetable, and can be eaten in many ways. It is the most nutritious when it is cooked, as opposed to raw or straight from the can. And most of the carbs coming from spinach are fiber, which are amazing for gut health. Spinach also has small amounts of sugar.

Bottom line, adding spinach and other greens to your salads can only do you good. And as with anything, consume in moderation. Popeye was just a cartoon for kids, and a versatile diet is a great way to stay interested in fitness journey.

The meal:

This can be called creamed spinach. Or spinach with cheese. Or anything you want really. What you need to know is that there is cheese and spinach involved, and that you can make this delicacy really fast and without any hassle. In the Balkans, people make pastry with spinach, which is healthy too. But it simply takes too much time to be called breakfast.

This one will make you think of everything else but spinach, considering how creamy and tasteful it is, and it will show you that you just have to have different approach to diet to make ingredients interesting and delightful.

Preparation

You will need:

  • Half a kilo of spinach
  • 200 g of cheese
  • ½ onion (or garlic)
  • Salt
  • Cube of butter
  • Pepper
  • Some good melting cheese (like cheddar or mozzarella) 100 g
  • Oregano
  • Cup of milk

Further guidance:

It is an undeniable fact that there are cheeses that melt. Some better, some worse. Your task here is to find two that distinctly melt differently, so you can have a mouthful of taste. If it was just a lot of one, it wouldn’t be the same. Trust us.

Second thing, if you are tight on schedule, you don’t have to cook the spinach. When you add it into the cream and cheese mix ( which you have to boil) it will get enough ‘’attention’’ to be ready to eat. We mentioned that it is healthier cooked than raw, but that is up to you.

Wash the spinach. Cut the stems, and put a large pan of water to boil. In the meantime, cut your onion ( or garlic, or both) and when the water boils, cook spinach for no more than a minute.

Take a large skillet and put the butter on it. Once it is melted, add the onion and cook until it gets the recognizable color and smell. Turn the heat to simmer and add the milk and cheese to the mix.

Use the strainer to squeeze the water out of the spinach.

If the cheese has melted in the skillet, add the salt and seasonings of your choice to it.

Add spinach and other cheese and mix to blend the flavors and ingredients.
