Gluten intolerance | What is it, and why are some allergic to gluten?

Gluten Intolerance

Gluten is a protein that we can find in wheat, rye, and barley. It helps to hold and bind the foods together. Studies say that gluten is harmful to our immune system. It is dangerous too for people who have certain conditions like gluten intolerance. However, some researchers claim that gluten can lower your risk of developing heart disease and stroke.

Gluten intolerance

On the other hand, some people are intolerant or allergic to gluten. These are the people who experience stomach pain after eating something that has the said protein. Other symptoms of people who are gluten intolerant are the following:

  • bloating
  • diarrhea
  • headaches
  • numbness
  • skin rashes

There are scientifically based reasons why a person is sensitive to gluten.

1. Run in Families

There are few scientific explanations about the causes of intolerance to gluten. On the other hand, researchers are not closed to the idea that it runs in the families in this case. It is like how sometimes people inherit the eyes or nose from their reproducers.

Since it is a genetic concern, studies have said there is a 10% chance for you to get it. If you are carrying a twin, they have a 75% chance to possess it. They could get it from their grandparents or parent who experiences the same thing. You can be sensitive to the protein in the early stages of your life. But, you might also have it when you get old.

2. System Mistake

When a person tries to eat foods containing gluten, the immune system immediately protects the body. It mistakenly accuses gluten as a harmful one to our health. It is very dangerous as it can affect our intestines. A person might find it hard to absorb nutrients if it happens continuously. This case is called Celiac Disease. A person with this condition can experience the following:

  • vomiting
  • unexpected weight loss
  • stomach pain
  • tiredness
  • swelling of hands and feet

Having this condition might result in a worse scenario like developing:

  • cancer
  • weakening of the bone
  • malnutrition
  • infertility
  • infections

Doctors also consider the medical histories not just of the patient but their family as well. When they are dealing with gluten intolerance, there are many tests conducted to make sure if the genes of their family have a big responsibility with it.

3. Environmental Factors

Environmental factors are also considered as a reason why people are sensitive to gluten. They say that it might happen if you’re exposed to foods containing the said protein at a very young age. Experts believe that you should let a child eat foods even if they are allergic to gluten when they already six months. They will manifest the danger when they grow up if you let them consume foods with it earlier.

4. No Diet Adjustments

Lack of diet adjustments can worsen the condition that you are in. If you are a person who is sensitive to gluten, you should remind yourself that you are not allowed to eat foods containing the said protein. The following are the foods and ingredients you should avoid:

  • wheat
  • barley
  • beer
  • cakes
  • oats

These foods and ingredients contain a high level of gluten. Usually, it takes months or years to heal from this condition. That is why it is better if you will prevent it at your best. On the other hand, you look for products stating that they are gluten-free. These are the foods you can take moderately. It is necessary to observe your diet so you can avoid worse situations concerning your life and health.
